PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is a Shooter, Action, Tactical, First-Person, Third-Person, and Survival game published by PUBG Corporation, Bluehole, Microsoft Studios released in 2017.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has the following genres of gameplay.

  • Shooter games are fast paced action games that are based on testing the players reaction time. They usually involve the player holding a weapon in front of them and attempting to shoot other players or characters. Some shooters are short lived arcade style, but most have both a single player mission series and some have a large multiplayer following. Common shooters include Call of Duty and Battlefield.
  • Games that are considered action are all about centering the player in the middle of an evolving situation.
  • Tactical games are a subgenre of strategy games that focus more on operational warfare, military style tactics, and troop placement. They focus more on logistics and production than on combat, and can at times feature complex battlefield tactics.
  • First person games are played from the perspective of the player. They typically have a gun or other weapon held out in front, but this is not always the case. Many first person games are sometimes called 'shooters' because the primary goal of the game is to shoot other players or creatures, but this is not always the case.
  • In a third person game you typically run around looking over the shoulder of the main character. They are frequently shooters like Gears of War or platformers like Tomb Raider or Assassins Creed.
  • Survival games are usually focused on resource management, such as ammo and health, and occasionally include elements of stealth. They tend to be based on either supernatural enemies, have horror themes, or be post-apocalyptic. The primary gameplay mechanic is to simply stay alive.

How to Port Forward PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds

When you are playing PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds you might need to forward some ports in your router. Forwarding ports is a useful trick in gaming because it can really help to make your network connection most stable and frequently even faster. Routers were not designed to allow incoming network requests and some games can play tremendously better if an incoming connection is forwarded through the router to the game.

Before You Forward a Port

Before you can forward a port you need to know the following things:

  • Your router's IP address.
  • Your gaming machine's IP address.
  • A list of TCP and UDP ports to forward.

How to find your router's IP Address

The easiest way to find your router's IP address is to run our free Router Detector utility. It's a part of the Network Utilities suite of tools and it's completely free to use.

How To Forward Ports

Most people use our Network Utilities software package to forward ports. It's the easiest way to forward ports when you need them and then close them when you do not. You can also do it by hand.

The process for forwarding a port is generally:

  • Login to your router.
  • Find your routers port forwarding section.
  • Put the IP address of your computer or gaming console in the proper box in your router.
  • Put the TCP and UDP ports for your game in the corresponding boxes in your router.
  • Sometimes you have to reboot your router for the changes to take effect.

One of the first games I tested on Xbox Series X was PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. As a boomer, it is still my favorite battle royale, but I play on PC. A big reason for that is the game runs at 30 frames per second on console. And I was disappointed that it still ran at that framerate even with the next-gen power of the new Xbox. But since then, PUBG Corp. launched an update for PUBG's public test server that finally unlocks the framerate across all consoles. The result is that this last-player-standing shooter finally feels smooth and responsive on console.

PUBG runs excellently on Xbox Series X. The battle royale averages 60 frames per second on Xbox Series X while hitting an average framerate of 55 on Xbox One X. This is when the game is in Framerate mode, which sets the resolution to 1080p.

Above: But things aren't as close as they appear.

If you only look at the chart above, however, you might assume that the Xbox One X runs PUBG nearly as well as the Series X, but that isn't the whole story. First, the framerate runs at a nearly locked 60fps on Series X with only the most minor hiccups. The One X is much more inconsistent, and you can feel that during gameplay.

As a quick note, if you notice visual differences between the two versions, those all come down to the time and weather changes on the map.

Screen tearing is distracting in PUBG on Xbox One X

Even more noticeable is the screen tearing on Xbox One X. This version has a ton of noticeable tearing because it happens all up and down image. I tend not to notice tearing if it happens near the top of the frame or when you start getting into super-high refresh rates. But at 60Hz and dozens of back-to-back tears right in the meaty part of the image, it's really distracting.

The yellow lines in this picture represents a recent tear, and you'll notice that isn't happening at all on the Series X version.

Above: Lots ‘o tearing.

Overall, the Xbox Series X version feels like the way the game was meant to be played. It maintains a more consistent framerate, and it does so without creating unsightly tearing. If you plug a keyboard and mouse into your Series X, the experience is going to closely mimic the PC. And that's high praise for this particular game.
